Statement from Premier Pillai on buying local this holiday season

Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

“With the holiday season in full swing, I would like to remind Yukoners of the incredible impact we can have by supporting small businesses and local entrepreneurs. These businesses go beyond selling goods and services, they create jobs, sponsor our sports teams, host community events and contribute to the vibrant life we enjoy here in the territory.

“The Yukon is home to over 2,800 businesses. In retail, restaurant and bar sectors alone, 250 businesses employ roughly 4,000 Yukoners. For many local artisans and self-employed individuals, this is the busiest and most important time of the year as they make the majority of their revenue during the holiday season. When you choose to spend locally, Yukon businesses are able to grow and reinvest in our communities.

“I also would like to acknowledge the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce and the Yukon Chamber of Commerce for their hard work in promoting our local business community through initiatives like the Buy Local campaign. Their collaborative efforts are helping to build a stronger, more resilient economy across the territory.

“Our government supports Yukon businesses through initiatives like the Economic Development Fund, offering financial aid for innovation, sustainability and growth. I encourage business owners to connect with the Department of Economic Development to learn how they help with planning, market research, financing and access to funding, mentorship and networking opportunities. “I hope everyone will share the Yukon spirit this season by visiting the many local events, shops and craft fairs across the territory.”
