Premier Pillai has issued the following statement:
“Arctic security and sovereignty are critical priorities for the Yukon and our territory plays an important role in Canada’s northern defence strategy. To strengthen this role, we are proud to partner with the federal government to establish a Naval Reserve presence in the Yukon. This initiative is a key step in strengthening national defence and enhancing the operational readiness of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in the region.
“As the first step in this initiative, we are committed to supporting the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) as they explore the viability of a Naval Reserve presence in the Yukon starting in the summer of 2025. The Yukon government is proud to offer both the workspace and resources necessary for this important effort, which will not only enhance Canada's Arctic capabilities but also bring vital opportunities to our communities.
“The establishment of a Naval Reserve in the Yukon reflects a shared vision for a more resilient and stronger Canadian Navy that can effectively operate in Canada’s vast northern region. This effort is part of the broader initiative to restructure the Naval Reserve and it will help the RCN recruit, train and retain the personnel needed to strengthen operational readiness. By collaborating with the Government of Canada, we are ensuring that the Navy is better equipped to respond to both domestic and global challenges.
“The Yukon’s support for this initiative is a reflection of our ongoing commitment to northern security and to the development of local talent. We are proud to offer Yukoners an opportunity to engage with the Navy, learn practical maritime skills and develop leadership capabilities that will help strengthen both our region and the Canadian Armed Forces as a whole.
“This partnership signals a strong commitment to asserting Canada’s sovereignty in the Arctic and demonstrates the growing role of the North in our national defence strategy. By increasing the CAF’s presence in the North, we are making a clear statement about our readiness to meet the unique challenges of this vast and strategic region.
“The Yukon government appreciates the partnership with the federal government and the Royal Canadian Navy as we take this important step forward in strengthening our national defence and providing meaningful opportunities for Yukoners.
“Together, we are shaping a more secure, prepared and resilient North.”
