Statement from Minister Bellmore on Yukon athletes attending the Special Olympics Canada Games

Minister of Community Services Cory Bellmore has issued the following statement:

“I invite all Yukoners to join me in cheering on Special Olympics Team Yukon, who begin their competitions in the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games tomorrow in Medicine Hat, Alberta.

“Competing in athletics, swimming, powerlifting, rhythmic gymnastics, bocce, golf and soccer, Team Yukon will be represented by 37 athletes, coaches and mission staff.

“Making Team Yukon is a tremendous accomplishment and a testament to the hard work our athletes put in to prepare for the Games. The ‘Fireweed Fierce’ theme featured on Team Yukon’s uniforms is a fitting reflection of this remarkable group of athletes. Like our iconic fireweed, they have demonstrated strength, resilience and determination.

“Guiding our athletes every step of the way are their coaches. I commend their dedication and efforts in ensuring our athletes will be ready for the competition.

“I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to the mission staff, chefs and the team at Special Olympics Yukon. Supporting our athletes on the national stage is a collective effort and we are grateful to everyone who helped make this experience possible.

“While in Medicine Hat, I know Team Yukon will be great ambassadors for our territory. I also know they will display excellent sportsmanship and, most importantly, have lots of fun.
