Statement from Minister Benoit on the Nisutlin Bay Bridge replacement project

Minister of Highways and Public Works Linda Benoit has issued the following statement:

“Since providing an update on the Nisutlin Bay Bridge replacement project earlier this year, the Government of Yukon has continued to work with industry experts and stakeholders to determine the best path forward for completing this important infrastructure project.

“I am pleased to share that we have now retained COWI North America Ltd., an internationally recognized consulting firm with extensive experience in bridge design, to provide engineering oversight and support the development of a remediation design for the project.

“Working alongside the Department of Highways and Public Works and other technical experts, COWI will help advance the design of the remediation work needed to ensure the bridge can be completed safely, effectively and in the best interest of Yukoners.

“We recognize the importance of this project to the residents of Teslin and all those who rely on this transportation corridor. As work progresses, we are committed to keeping the community informed. We look forward to providing a project update at a community open house in Teslin later this year.

“Regardless of why the project is in this state, our team is committed to completing it. Once the design is finalized, construction will resume and a clear timeline for the bridge opening will be established.

“In the meantime, the existing Nisutlin Bay Bridge remains safe and fully operational. The bridge continues to be regularly monitored, maintained and professionally assessed to ensure it remains safe for public use until the new bridge is completed.”
