Statement from the Minister Clarke on the Nisutlin Bay Bridge replacement project

Minister of Highways and Public Works Nils Clarke has issued the following statement:

“The Government of Yukon is committed to building safe, reliable infrastructure that serves both Yukoners and visitors travelling across the territory. The Nisutlin Bay Bridge replacement is a key part of that work – ensuring a vital connection that serves communities now and into the future.

“On May 15, 2025, the project's Engineer of Record, WSP, identified concerns regarding soil conditions on the north side of the new bridge. As a precaution, work in that area has been paused to allow for a thorough investigation. Geotechnical experts have been brought in and are working closely with our engineering team to assess the issue and determine the best path forward.

“While it is still too early to confirm, timelines might be impacted. Right now, we’re focused on keeping the project moving forward safely and efficiently. We are committed to keeping the public informed and will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.

“The existing Nisutlin Bay Bridge remains safe and fully operational. It will continue to serve the public until the new bridge is complete. Construction is ongoing in other areas of the project not impacted by this issue.

“The Nisutlin Bay Bridge replacement is a major investment in the Yukon’s future. It supports meaningful economic development and will enhance connectivity along one of the territory’s busiest and most important trade corridors. Projects like this help build a stronger, more resilient Yukon for the generations to come."
