Statement from Minister of Education on school bus cancellations in cold weather

Minister of Education Scott Kent has issued the following statement:

“On behalf of the Department of Education, I would like to apologize to families and students for the unnecessary stress and anxiety we created by the inaccurate information shared about cold weather impacts to school buses earlier today.

“Let me be clear: schools will remain open during cold weather, and school buses will continue to provide safe and reliable transportation for students.

“While there are challenges for us all when the weather is this cold, there have been more school bus cancellations recently than usual. The Department will work with Standard Bus to ensure school buses are able to get students to school, no matter the weather.

“When buses are cancelled, we know that notifications are coming too late for families to adjust. We are committed to working with Standard Bus to improve the notification system in the immediate term and more broadly when students return to school after the holidays.

“I will be reaching out to the President of Standard Bus to ensure these matters are addressed with urgency.”
