Statement from Minister Gehmair on federal funding announcement for skilled trades support

Minister of Economic Development, Tourism and Culture Jen Gehmair has issued the following statement:

“The Government of Yukon welcomes the Government of Canada’s announcement of additional funding for provinces and territories through the Team Canada Strong initiative to support skilled trades training and workforce development across the country.

“This initiative, which was announced at last week’s Forum of Labour Market Ministers meeting in Halifax, aims to recruit, train and hire 80,000 to 100,000 new Red Seal trades workers across Canada in the next five years to help build much-needed homes and infrastructure. The Government of Canada is seeking to work with territories and provinces to expand access to pre-apprenticeship and technical training and certify those workers. An additional $2 billion will be invested over five years through new bilateral agreements with provinces and territories.

“Skilled trades workers are essential to building the homes, infrastructure and services Yukoners rely on every day. Investments that help people access training, gain workplace experience and pursue rewarding careers are important to strengthening the Yukon’s workforce and supporting our growing economy.

“With the Yukon’s expanding population, we face increased demand for housing and have significant energy and health care infrastructure pressures. Our need for skilled and Red Seal trades workers is only expected to increase.

“We will soon begin discussions with the Government of Canada and anticipate that agreements and funding could be in place as soon as next year, subject to negotiations. We look forward to working with the Government of Canada and our provincial and territorial partners, employers and training providers as details of the initiative are developed further.

“As discussions move forward, we will continue to advocate for approaches that reflect the unique needs of northern and remote jurisdictions. This includes support for workplace-based training and apprenticeships, as well as success measures that recognize participation, retention and employment outcomes throughout the apprenticeship journey, alongside progress toward Red Seal certification.

“Together, we can help build a strong, resilient and skilled workforce that creates opportunities for Yukoners and supports the territory’s long-term prosperity.”
