Statement from Minister of Highways and Public Works Nils Clarke and Minister of Education Jeanie McLean on winter back-to-school safety

Minister of Highways and Public Works Nils Clarke and Minister of Education Jeanie McLean have issued the following statement:

“Students throughout the Yukon will soon return to school and we wish them a successful winter semester after what we hope was a relaxing holiday break. As Yukoners readjust to their morning and afternoon routines, we ask that drivers in particular take steps to ensure the roads stay safe for Yukon students.

“Please be mindful of your speed and always watch your surroundings, especially in school zones and around crosswalks. Drive to road conditions, clear your car windows of ice and snow and maintain a safe distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you. If you haven’t done so already, ensure your vehicle has winter tires. These measures will help prevent collisions, allowing everyone to arrive at their destination safely. The latest road conditions are available on 511Yukon.ca, by phoning 511 or on the 511Yukon app.

“We want to remind all families who have children riding the school bus to register for My School Bus Monitor at yukon.ca/bus-safety. Sometimes, school buses are delayed or cancelled due to extreme winter weather. By registering, you will be notified of any changes. If delays are expected, do not leave your child alone at the bus stop. Wait with them until the bus arrives. As always, ensure children are dressed appropriately for the weather and when necessary, encourage them to wear clothing that’s visible to people driving in the dark.

“Wishing a healthy, happy and safe winter semester to everyone!”
