Statement from Minister Istchenko on the meeting of the Canadian Council of Fisheries and Aquaculture Ministers

Minister of Environment Wade Istchenko has issued the following statement:

“I was honoured to attend the Canadian Council of Fisheries and Aquaculture Ministers meetings in Victoria from August 19 to 20, 2026. It was a great opportunity to connect with my counterparts from across Canada to discuss the sustainability and resilience of Canada’s fisheries and aquaculture sectors and the growing impacts of climate change on marine and freshwater systems.

“Ministers discussed marine security and protection against invasive species, the social and economic importance of supporting sustainable recreational and commercial fishing opportunities and the economic development of harvesting.

“The Government of Yukon shared important information with delegates about the impact of climate change on Yukon waters and Yukon River Chinook salmon. Melting permafrost and warming trends impact rivers, lakes, oceans and fish habitat and contribute to unstable salmon populations.

“Jurisdictions across Canada face similar challenges. Finding effective solutions that create positive outcomes requires collaboration and knowledge sharing. I thank my counterparts and delegates at the Canadian Council of Fisheries and Aquaculture Ministers meetings for sharing their valuable perspectives, approaches and policy frameworks for adapting to climate change impacts and protecting our waters, fish and their habitat.”
