Statement from Minister Istchenko on the start of the 2026 hunting season

Minister of Environment Wade Istchenko has issued the following statement:

“The hunting season in the Yukon begins on August 1. For many Yukoners, hunting brings families and communities together and strengthens connections to the land. It helps build skills, pass knowledge down through generations and offers the chance to harvest healthy, sustainable food.

“The Yukon is home to numerous hunting opportunities. These opportunities depend on our collective commitment to conservation and responsible stewardship. This government’s direction is guided by the Yukon Wildlife Act.

”The Wildlife Act is informed by science, community and Traditional Knowledge. It is also supported by our partnerships with Yukon First Nations governments, transboundary Indigenous governments, local co-management partners and stakeholders.

“The privilege of hunting comes with the responsibility to hunt ethically, safely and respectfully.

“Licensed hunters should always be aware what category of land they are on and respect the regulations that precede it.

“This includes Yukon First Nation Settlement Lands or Inuvialuit Traditional Territories, community boundaries and private property.

“Take the Hunter Education and Ethics Development course to familiarize yourself with best practices and review the Yukon hunting regulations to ensure you know the rules that apply where you plan to hunt.

“When we work together and treat the land, wildlife and fellow hunters with kindness and respect, we can ensure these traditions continue for generations to come.”
