Statement from Minister Lang on Two-Spirit+ Day in the Yukon

Minister responsible for Women and Gender Equity Directorate Laura Lang has issued the following statement:

“On March 20, we celebrate Two-Spirit+ Day in the Yukon. This day is observed on the spring equinox, a moment that carries special meaning for those of us who live in the North.

“After months of long winter darkness, Yukoners begin to feel the return of the light. The equinox marks the point when day and night are equal in length, a powerful reminder of balance and renewal. It is fitting that Two-Spirit+ Day is observed on this day of balance. The symbolism of equal light and darkness reflects values that are deeply connected to many Indigenous teachings – the importance of balance, respect and harmony within ourselves and our communities.

“The term ‘Two-Spirit’ reflects diverse Indigenous understandings of gender and identity. For many Indigenous cultures, Two-Spirit people have long held respected roles within their communities – as leaders, Knowledge Keepers, caregivers and people who helped bridge different ways of seeing the world. Honouring these traditions is part of how we move forward today.

“Our government is committed to working alongside Yukon First Nations, Indigenous organizations and community partners to advance reconciliation, promote gender equity and support inclusive communities. That includes continuing the implementation of the Yukon’s Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit+ People Strategy and investing in initiatives that help ensure gender-diverse people feel safe, supported and respected.

“Together, we can continue building the Yukon where everyone, regardless of gender identity, culture or background, can live with dignity, safety and belonging.”
