Minister of Education Jeanie McLean has issued the following statement:
“Our government welcomes the Government of Canada’s $7.36 million investment over three years in Yukon schools, through the new National School Food Program.
"This funding supports our government’s commitment to ensuring all Yukon students have access to nutritious meals at school. Providing healthy food at school helps improve students’ physical and mental health, enhances their learning outcomes and overall wellbeing and eases financial pressures on Yukon families. It also strengthens local food systems, positively impacting our economy.
"Since the announcement, our government has worked closely with important community partners, including the Yukon First Nation Education Directorate and the Yukon Food for Learning Association. Their extensive experience and valuable insights have been essential in preparing to expand and enhance school food programs across the territory.
"I want to express my appreciation to the Honourable Jenna Sudds, Canada’s Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, for Canada’s flexibility in allowing the Yukon to roll over 100 per cent of the initial year's funding into 2025–26. This flexibility ensures we can thoughtfully plan and maximize the positive impact of this investment.
"Looking forward, we will continue to work closely with our partners to support more students, enhance food infrastructure in Yukon schools and deliver effective programming. Together, we are committed to ensuring that every child in the Yukon has the nourishment they need to succeed.”
