Statement from Minister McLean welcoming students and staff to the 2025−26 school year

Minister of Education Jeanie McLean has issued the following statement:

“As the new school year begins across the Yukon, I want to welcome all students, families and educators back to class.

“Whether starting kindergarten, beginning the final year of high school or returning as a dedicated member of our school staff, this time of year brings new energy, new goals and new opportunities.

“Education in the Yukon is unique and our schools reflect the strength of our communities. We’re proud of our commitment to inclusive, culturally rich learning environments that recognize and respect the contributions of Yukon First Nations.

“This year, we continue our focus on student wellbeing, mental health supports and ensuring that classrooms remain safe, respectful spaces for everyone. We are also working closely with school communities to strengthen literacy, improve access to hands-on learning and support youth in planning for their future.

“I want to recognize the Yukon’s educators and school staff who create welcoming and high-quality learning environments across the territory. I also acknowledge the important contribution of school support staff who work every day to maintain clean and safe school grounds for all.

“Families are essential partners in education. The care, encouragement and commitment that parents and guardians show each day are central to supporting their children’s learning journey.

“As students return to classrooms, we remind everyone to slow down in school zones, be alert near bus stops and crosswalks and help ensure students get to and from school safely.

“I wish everyone a safe, supportive and successful school year ahead.”
