Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee has issued the following statement:
"October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time for us to pause and reflect on the impact that breast cancer continues to have on Yukoners, their families and communities. It is also a moment to honour the strength of those living with and beyond cancer and to recommit ourselves to prevention, early detection, treatment and care.
“Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting Yukoners and it continues to have a profound impact on individuals and families across the territory. While advances in treatment and awareness have helped improve outcomes, early detection through screening remains the most effective tool we have. Alongside breast cancer screening, the Yukon also offers organized screening programs for colorectal and cervical cancers, which together provide Yukoners with important opportunities to detect cancer early, when treatment is most effective.
“Over the past year, we have continued to strengthen cancer care in our territory. In the 2025-26 Budget, the Government of Yukon has maintained significant investments to support cancer care services, including maintaining partnerships with the Canadian Cancer Society, the British Columbia Cancer Registry and Canadian Partnership Against Cancer. We have also deepened our partnership with the Yukon Hospital Corporation through a new memorandum of understanding to support mammography services. This includes supporting territory-wide education on the importance of mammography screening, increasing participation rates and developing methods to report on Yukon breast health at a national level. These investments build on previous commitments and reflect our determination to provide Yukoners with the supports they need for prevention, screening and treatment.
“This month, we are also launching a public awareness campaign to encourage Yukoners to get screened for breast, colorectal and cervical cancers. Screening saves lives. Detecting cancer early often means treatment is simpler and more effective. These screening services are available at no cost to eligible Yukoners and many can be accessed close to home through hospitals, clinics and community health centres.
“I encourage every Yukoner who is eligible to take advantage of these programs. Talk to your health care provider, book an appointment or request a kit. Making screening part of your regular health care routine is a simple but powerful step that can protect your health and may save your life.
"To anyone facing cancer, know that you are not alone. Comprehensive cancer care support is available through the Department of Health and Social Services and the Yukon Hospital Corporation’s Cancer Care team. If you have questions or need help navigating your cancer care, assistance is available by contacting the Whitehorse General Hospital’s cancer care coordinator at 867-393-8853 or by emailing [email protected]. No referral is needed. For additional information about screening, visit Yukon.ca/cancer-screening.
“Breast Cancer Awareness Month reminds us of the progress we have made and of the work that still lies ahead. By raising awareness, investing in care and supporting one another, we can continue to make meaningful strides toward a healthier future for all Yukoners."
