Minister of Justice and Attorney General Tracy-Anne McPhee has issued the following statement:
“Every April, Law Day is celebrated across Canada marking the signing of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, a defining moment in our nation’s history and a cornerstone of our democracy since April 17, 1982.
“The Charter protects the fundamental rights and freedoms that shape who we are as Canadians including freedom of religion, expression, association and peaceful assembly. It guarantees equality before and under the law and equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination. It also protects the rights to ‘life, liberty and security of the person’. It is a reflection of our values as Canadians that guides our laws and lawmakers.
“Law Day is an important reminder that these rights and freedoms should not be taken for granted. It is an opportunity to take pride in our Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and to recognize the responsibility we all share in upholding and protecting these rights and freedoms.
“As Minister of Justice and Attorney General, I am committed to continuing to create, amend and maintain laws that are fair, independent and unbiased for all Yukoners.
“This Law Day, we must all take a moment to learn more about the Charter, cherish the rights and freedoms we enjoy here in Canada and recognize the vital role we all play in protecting and promoting justice in our communities.”
