Statement from Minister Mostyn on Whitehorse’s 75th anniversary of incorporation

Minister of Community Services Richard Mostyn has issued the following statement:

“Today, we celebrate a significant milestone – the City of Whitehorse’s 75th anniversary.

“To mark this important occasion, we must take a moment to look back and reflect on the journey of this remarkable city. Whitehorse began as a small settlement on the traditional territories of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta’an Kwäch’än Council, who have been the caretakers of this land for time immemorial.

"On May 22, 1950, Commissioner J. E. Gibben proclaimed to the citizens of the territory that Whitehorse would become an incorporated municipality on June 1st. At that time, the town was home to roughly 2,500 people and was growing rapidly, thanks in large part to the construction of the Alaska Highway.

“Since then, Whitehorse has grown into the largest city in northern Canada, with over 30,000 residents. It is now one of Canada’s most attractive cities to live, work and play, with over 850 kilometres of wilderness trails for people to enjoy and strong employment opportunities.

“It has expanded beyond its industrial roots into a thriving city of history, cultures, the arts and sport. It is a place where newcomers begin new chapters and where everyone’s contributions weave together to create the unique city we celebrate today.

“The Yukon government is committed to continuing to support Whitehorse’s growth and the wellbeing of its residents. Earlier this year, I had the honour of presenting the City of Whitehorse’s 75th anniversary to the Association of Yukon Communities, underscoring our commitment to stand alongside this city and its residents.

“As Whitehorse continues to expand and evolve, the Yukon government will continue to work collaboratively with the City to ensure strong, resilient and thriving communities. We will continue to invest in services, infrastructure and opportunities to support Yukoners.

“Congratulations to Whitehorse on your 75th birthday. Thank you to everyone who has called this city home – your contributions have shaped Whitehorse into the remarkable place it is today.”
