Statement from Minister Pillai on the Canadian Institute for Arctic Security LATITUDE meeting

Minister of Economic Development Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

“Keeping the North and the Yukon top of mind for leaders across Canada is key to shaping defence and security policy, and to attracting investment to our region.

“This week, Grand Chief Alatini and I co-chaired the Canadian Institute for Arctic Security’s (CIAS) first LATITUDE event in Haines Junction. This meeting brought together key leaders in the defence and security sectors for open, honest conversations about the realities of northern security challenges, including those specific to the Yukon.

“The CIAS created an environment for attendees to engage in meaningful discussions, helping develop ways to better communicate northern priorities, influence federal decision making and ensure the Arctic and North remain relevant to all Canadians.

“Attendance included northern political leaders, federal departments related to security, the Canadian Armed Forces, academia and the business sector.

“By directly experiencing the Yukon’s vast and diverse landscapes, the CIAS created a lasting impact on attendees and increased their understanding of operational capabilities and limitations in the North – an experience that will help foster better coordination in identifying both threats and opportunities.

“My thanks to the attendees, Champagne and Aishihik First Nations and the Da Kų Cultural Centre, the Canadian Rangers Patrol Group in Haines Junction for an impactful and valuable program that I hope has long-term impact in building a more secure North.”
