Premier Currie Dixon has issued the following statement:
“The Yukon joins Canadians across the country in mourning the terrible loss and tragedy that occurred at CFB Wainwright in Alberta. On behalf of all Yukoners, I extend my condolences and support to the families, military members and community affected.
“As details are still emerging, the confirmed loss of four active service members, as well as dozens of people seriously injured, is a national tragedy.
“The Prime Minister and the Premier of Alberta both outlined the swift action of the many first responders who mobilized to care for the injured and continue to support their recovery. Equally impressive are the stories of the military and civilian crews who courageously fought the fire through the night to prevent its further spread and to keep neighbouring communities safe.
“While support or assistance from the Yukon has not been requested at this time, we stand ready to do so, and I have asked that we extend an open offer through appropriate channels to both the governments of Alberta and Canada should assistance of any kind be required.
“I have also asked that flags at all territorial government buildings be lowered to half-mast as a mark of respect and solidarity and to honour those who were lost.
“Finally, there is a longstanding link between the Yukon and Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. Many Yukoners have served or are serving with the Patricia’s and we join them in carrying the weight of this loss. To all of those serving in the Canadian Armed Forces, the Yukon thanks and stands with you.”
