Statement from Premier Dixon on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Premier Currie Dixon has issued the following statement:

“September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, where we are called to acknowledge the widespread harm that the residential school system has caused to Indigenous Peoples, families and communities across Canada.

“There is sadness as many remember and mourn the children who never returned home. We also honour the Survivors of residentials schools and the resiliency of Yukon First Nations communities.

“In the Yukon, the Yukon Residential School Missing Children Project continues to investigate former residential school sites across the territory to learn the truth about children who went missing. The Yukon government continues to support efforts to bring to light and record the history and impacts of the Yukon’s residential schools.

“On this day, I invite all Yukoners to stand in solidarity with Survivors, families and communities who continue to be impacted by what happened in Canada’s residential school system.

“Recognizing uncomfortable truths about residential schools is part of the journey towards reconciliation. I encourage Yukoners to check in on each other and take time to reflect on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action.”
