Statement from Premier Pemberton and Minister Mostyn on Yukon lot development

Premier Mike Pemberton and Minister Richard Mostyn have issued the following statement:

“Starting this week, Yukoners will see lots for sale in Watson Lake, followed by lot releases in Whistle Bend and Haines Junction.

"These and future lot releases represent the latest culmination of work that began in 2021, when we promised Yukoners we would respond to housing pressures by building lots across the territory.

“In the years that followed, we initiated the most ambitious land development program in the territory’s history and the biggest in rural Yukon. Never before have so many residential lots been developed in such a short time frame. The neighbourhoods we’ve built will be the foundation on which our territory’s prosperity and the next generations of Yukoners will grow.

“Our thanks go out to our partners, First Nations, municipalities and industry who played an instrumental role in this program. We are especially thankful for the Department of Community Services’ Land Development Branch, who worked diligently to develop lots and navigate the challenges presented by this ambitious goal.

“Most of all, we would like to thank the many Yukon families who will bring life to these new neighbourhoods. We brought the lots to market, but these are the people who will build our communities.

“We also want to extend our sincere thanks to the dedicated public servants across the Government of Yukon whose hard work has made these lot developments possible. From planners and engineers to policy advisors and frontline staff, your commitment, collaboration and tireless efforts have been essential to delivering on this ambitious goal. Your behind-the-scenes work has helped lay the groundwork – literally and figuratively – for stronger, more vibrant communities across the territory.

“We’re proud of the progress made in delivering new lots across Yukon communities. At the same time, we know that the work is far from over. Safe, affordable and accessible housing remains a pressing need for many and we remain fully committed to continuing this work – ensuring that current and future generations have access to the land and housing they need to build a place to call home.”
