Premier Pemberton has issued the following statement:
“On Monday, August 18, we commemorate Discovery Day in the Yukon.
“Discovery Day marks the anniversary of the first discovery of gold in Bonanza Creek in 1896, a defining moment in the history of what we now call the Yukon. News of this historic find travelled quickly, drawing thousands of prospectors from across North America and beyond in hopes of striking it rich.
“While the gold rush was short lived, its effects were felt long after the final prospectors left the territory. It brought profound change, with First Nations communities uprooted and forcibly displaced to make way for the stampede.
“The history of the Yukon and the gold rush are closely tied. It is important that as we move forward, we reflect on our history in its entirety, recognizing how these past events continue to shape our present.
“Discovery Day offers an opportunity to come together as a community – to acknowledge our shared history, learn from our past, and celebrate the resilience and strength of all who call this land home. It’s a chance to honour the culture, stories and contributions that continue to shape the Yukon today. Sustainable and responsible mining remains an important part of our territory’s future, balancing economic opportunity with respect for the land and the communities that depend on it.
“I had the chance to be in Dawson City this week ahead of the festivities, where I toured placer mining operations and got a real sense of what responsible mining looks like – and how important it is to our territory. I also took in the energy and spirit of the community, which is at the core of the Yukon’s gold rush history.
“As we prepare for the long weekend, I encourage everyone to celebrate responsibly. If you’re out camping, remain bear and fire aware. If you’re out on the roads, rivers, lakes or trails, be prepared, stay safe and enjoy the weekend.
“Wishing everyone an enjoyable Discovery Day!”
