Premier Mike Pemberton has issued the following statement:
"Tomorrow, August 9, is the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples – a day to honour the knowledge, languages, cultures and stewardship that Indigenous Peoples have carried and shared for countless generations, here and around the world.
“This day was created by the United Nations to remind everyone of the importance of protecting Indigenous rights and making sure Indigenous voices are heard in every conversation – local, national and global.
“Here in the Yukon and across Canada, Indigenous Peoples have lived on and cared for these lands since time immemorial. Every Nation and community has its own unique culture, language and way of seeing and relating to the land, waters and one another.
“We also recognize that colonialism has caused deep and lasting harm to Indigenous Peoples. The Government of Yukon remains committed to walking the path of reconciliation, supporting self-determination and working together for a better future.
“Wishing everyone a meaningful International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.”
