Statement from Premier Pemberton on Minister Alty’s visit to the Yukon

“On behalf of the Government of Yukon, I was pleased to welcome Minister Rebecca Alty on her first visit to the territory in her role as the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations. We were also joined by Member of Parliament Dr. Brendan Hanley for this important meeting.

“Strong partnerships with our federal counterparts and Yukon First Nations are essential to supporting Yukoners and communities across the North. Meaningful investments are key to preserving our way of life – not just for today, but for generations to come.

“We had an important conversation about community safety, recognizing that safer communities are fundamental to the wellbeing of Yukoners. This is a complex challenge and one that we must continue to address together to help our communities thrive. I also stressed the urgent need for bail reform to help ensure the justice system better protects communities while supporting fair treatment for individuals, helping to reduce repeat offences and improve overall safety.

“Strong, sustainable communities are at the heart of the Yukon. That’s why we discussed the B.C.–Yukon grid connect project and its potential to boost the territory’s energy resilience. As part of this broader focus on supporting the Yukon’s growth, we also talked about ways to improve the Yukon environmental and socio-economic assessment process.

“This meeting was a valuable step toward continued collaboration and meaningful dialogue on issues that matter to the Yukon. I thank Minister Alty and MP Hanley for their time yesterday and look forward to continuing our work together for the benefit of all Yukoners.”
