Statement from Premier Pillai and Minister Mostyn on the National Day of Mourning

Premier Ranj Pillai and Minister responsible for Yukon Workers’ Compensation Health and Safety Board Richard Mostyn have issued the following statement:

“Each year, on April 28, Yukoners and Canadians observe the National Day of Mourning to remember and honour workers who have died, been injured or fallen ill due to a work-related incident.

“On this day, we renew our commitment to health and safety in the workplace.

“Last year in the Yukon, 703 workers were injured on the job. Of those, 377 workers required time away from the workplace to recover. Sadly, there were two workplace fatalities. Our deepest condolences go out to their families, friends and colleagues.

“We all have a role in prioritizing prevention and making our workplaces safer, so that all workers go home safely.

“We encourage all Yukoners to join this year’s Day of Mourning ceremony at the Workers’ Memorial in Shipyards Park or online through the Yukon Federation of Labour’s Facebook page and on the YFL website.”
