Statement from Premier Pillai on Asian Heritage Month

The following statement was released by Premier Ranj Pillai:

“May is Asian Heritage Month in Canada.

“Asian Heritage Month is an opportunity to reflect on and recognize the many contributions that Canadians of Asian heritage have made and continue to make to Canada.

“For years, people of Asian heritage have been contributing to the growth and prosperity of the Yukon. 1957, Vancouverite Bruce Sung opened the territory’s first supermarket in Whitehorse. Massa Sakata arrived in the Yukon in 1907 from Japan and worked in Whitehorse, Mayo and Dawson as a cook and barber among other endeavours. During World War II, he faced increased discrimination and was required to carry an ID card and regularly report to the RCMP. He later received the Centennial Confederation Medal for his several contributions to Yukon communities. And, Har and Jasbir Randhawa, who recently left the territory, are fondly remembered as champions for human rights through their dedication to workers’ rights and child care advocacy.

“Our government is committed to promoting diversity, inclusion and respect for all members of our society. We must work together to build a territory that is welcoming and inclusive for everyone,

“I encourage all Yukoners to take part in the various events and activities that are being organized throughout the month of May to celebrate Asian Heritage Month. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the rich and diverse cultures of Asian Canadians, and to celebrate the many contributions that they have made to society.
