Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:
“May is Asian Heritage Month in Canada, a time to learn about and celebrate the histories, cultures and many contributions of Asian Canadians.
“Asian Canadians have helped shape the Yukon for more than a century. From early pioneers to present-day community leaders, their impact is deeply woven into the story of our territory. Today, we see the impact of that legacy in our businesses, our cultural events, our diverse community leaders and in everyday acts of kindness and partnership.
“The Canadian Filipino Association of the Yukon, the Chinese Canadian Association of Yukon, the Yukon Malayali Association and many more organizations play a key role in sharing and celebrating vibrant Asian heritage across the Yukon.
“This year we also pause to reflect on the heartbreaking events at the Lapu-Lapu Festival in Vancouver, with 11 lives tragically lost. Our hearts go out to the families, friends and loved ones of those affected by this devastating event. We grieve alongside the Filipino community and we stand in solidarity with them during this difficult time.
“While we celebrate Asian Heritage Month, we also recognize that anti-Asian racism still exists and we continue working toward a Yukon that is welcoming, inclusive and respectful for everyone.
“On behalf of the Government of Yukon, thank you to all Canadians of Asian heritage for your many contributions. You are an important part of the Yukon’s past, present and future.”
