Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:
"Today, Sikhs in the Yukon and around the world celebrate the 555th Gurpurab of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the 555th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism and the first Sikh Guru.
"On this special anniversary, families and friends will come together to reflect on Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings such as values of unity, truth, compassion and equality, which continue to guide Sikhs today. His timeless message of selflessness and inclusivity remains an inspiration not just to Sikhs but to all Yukoners as we work towards a just and caring society.
"This day also gives us an opportunity to recognize the significant contributions of Sikh Canadians in the Yukon who enrich and strengthen our communities with acts of kindness and support for those in need.
“Sikhs have deep-rooted ties to the Yukon, contributing significantly to the cultural diversity of the territory. The first Sikhs moved to the North in 1906 to aid in the construction of the railroad near Whitehorse and Carcross. This initial presence grew as more Sikh families moved northward during the 1960s and 1970s. The establishment of the Guru Nanak Sikh Organization of Yukon in 1988 marked a commitment to celebrating major festivals such as the Gurpurab of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. This journey culminated in 2020 with the opening of a permanent gurdwara in Whitehorse.
"On behalf of the Yukon government, let peace and happiness be with you always.”
