Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:
“Today, I had the privilege of meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney to discuss the priorities of our territory.
“This was a meaningful opportunity to speak directly about this issues that matter to Canadians and the North. Our conversations were constructive, forward-looking and centred on strengthening the partnership between the Yukon and the federal government. Now more than ever, strong northern leadership at the national level is essential.
“We discussed critical areas for collaboration, including efforts to reform Canada’s bail system to enhance community safety, the importance of sustained investment in nation-building infrastructure across the North and the urgency of passing amendments to the federal YESAA legislation to clear permit backlogs and support responsible development.
“I also emphasized the need for continued federal investment in the Yukon's health care infrastructure so all Yukoners can access the care they deserve. Additionally, I made it clear that decisions around defence and security in the North must be informed by northern voices and northern expertise.
“I left the meeting encouraged the Yukon’s voices are being heard and cooperation remains strong. We are committed to building on this momentum and working closely with the new federal Cabinet to advance our shared priorities in partnership with provincial and territorial Premiers and the Prime Minister.
“Together, we can continue to build a strong Yukon and Canada.”
