Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:
“Sunday marks the first day of National Indigenous History Month. Established in 2009, National Indigenous History Month invites us to seek a deeper understanding of Indigenous cultures and histories. It is an important time to learn about and celebrate the histories, cultures and ways of life of Indigenous Peoples in the Yukon and across Canada.
“The history and contributions of Indigenous Peoples in the Yukon are rich and complex. In this part of the country, Yukon First Nations, the Inuvialuit and the Tetlit Gwich’in were at the forefront of efforts to champion the rights of Indigenous groups to self-determination and self-government.
“Their vision and perseverance are revitalizing Indigenous languages, reinvigorating cultural practices and building vibrant communities throughout the Yukon. Indigenous Peoples have been stewards and caretakers of the lands and waters since time immemorial. The knowledge, teachings and contributions they have shared is reflected in the Yukon that we know today.
“It is essential that we also acknowledge the hard truths and ongoing legacy of colonialism that continue to affect us today. Collectively, we must confront the historic and ongoing challenges, injustices and systemic barriers Indigenous Peoples face. This is how we walk the path of reconciliation.
“I encourage Yukoners to seek out events in your community and join in recognition of National Indigenous History Month."
