Statement from Premier Pillai on Russian invasion of Ukraine

Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

“Tomorrow marks the one-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, one of the largest military conflicts and humanitarian crises in Europe since the end of World War II.

“Since the invasion was launched on February 24, 2022, there has been has untold misery, devastation and destruction across Ukraine. I join the international community in continuing to condemn the invasion.

“Yukoners, as always, have done what they can to help. Last year, the Government of Yukon donated $50,000 to the Canadian Red Cross to support humanitarian efforts in Ukraine and established the Ukrainian family support desk to provide assistance and resources for people impacted by the invasion. At least 45 Ukrainian immigrants have settled in the Yukon since February last year and we hope to welcome more Ukrainians to the Yukon to pursue peaceful, prosperous lives. I also want to acknowledge the work of the Ukrainian Canadian Association of the Yukon and the efforts of Yukoners who recently returned from delivering humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

“Ukrainian citizens living in the Yukon are an important part of our cultural fabric. I send them and all those affected by the invasion my ongoing condolences and share their hope for peace.”
