Premier Ranj Pillai, poses for a photo with the Consul General of Japan, Mr. Kohei Maruyama, on March 27, 2024 at the Jim Smith Building.

Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

“Today I had the pleasure of meeting with Japanese Consul General Maruyama and introducing Mr. Maruyama and his wife, Suzue, in the Yukon Legislative Assembly.

“Consul General Maruyama has proven to be an invaluable partner in fostering a strong relationship between Japan and the Yukon. This marks the sixth visit from Japanese diplomats in just over a year, underscoring Japan's sustained and significant involvement with the Yukon.

“Our conversation built on discussions we had when Mr. Maruyama visited last February. We focused on the Yukon's strategic significance in the Asia-Pacific and Arctic regions, economic collaboration, critical minerals, and the enhancement of people-to-people connections through tourism, immigration and cultural exchange.

“We also took some time to reflect on the Yukon government’s visit to Japan last September. I thanked Mr. Maruyama for his support in planning for our mission and for promoting our continued engagement with Japanese firms.

“I look forward to developing our relationship with Japan further as we partner in areas that align with our shared priorities and interests.”
