Statement from Premier Pillai on World Press Freedom Day

Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

“Today, on the 30th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day, we celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom and the vital role of free and independent media in our democracy.

“Journalism has its roots in freedom of expression. The theme for this year ‘Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights’ is a reminder of the importance of ensuring journalists can do their jobs without fear of reprisal or censorship. As we face new challenges in the digital age, we must remain committed to protecting press freedom and promoting responsible journalism.

“The Yukon has a proud tradition of supporting and defending the right to freedom of expression and a free press. We recognize that a vibrant and diverse media landscape is essential for holding governments and other institutions accountable, promoting transparency and openness and fostering public debate.

“I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the journalists, reporters and media professionals who work tirelessly to inform and engage the public. Your work is essential to our democracy and I applaud your dedication and commitment to the principles of press freedom.”
