Statement from Premier Silver on the 45th anniversary of Together Today for our Children Tomorrow

Forty-five years ago today, a courageous group of Yukon First Nation leaders travelled to Ottawa to present Together Today for Our Children Tomorrow to Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau. This influential document articulated a vision for a fair and just future where Yukon First Nations would be equal partners. The presentation of this document marked a pivotal moment in Yukon’s history and today we recognize the vision and determination shown by the forward-thinking leaders who created it.

 

Together Today for Our Children Tomorrow is responsible for reshaping relationships between the Governments of Canada, Yukon and Yukon First Nations. Its vision was brought to life through the Umbrella Final Agreement, which was signed 25 years ago this year. The Final and Self-Government Agreements that followed have paved the way for collaboration between governments, and their implementation continues to advance us towards reconciliation. These agreements form the cornerstone of governance in modern Yukon.

 

I urge all Yukoners to join the celebrations of this historic event – and to learn more about Together Today for Our Children Tomorrow, the Umbrella, Final and Self-Government Agreements, and all the efforts taking place in Yukon to advance the relationship between the Government of Yukon and First Nations.

 

Today we celebrate those who had the courage to call for a better and brighter future for Yukon First Nations. May we continue to work together today for our children tomorrow.
