Statement from the Government of Yukon regarding wildfire-related evacuations

Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee and Minister of Community Services Richard Mostyn issued the following statement regarding the Vuntut Gwitchin Government’s evacuation order for Old Crow:

“The Government of Yukon is supporting the Vuntut Gwitchin Government’s evacuation order for Old Crow. This order is due to forecasted weather and potential wildfire activity.

“Our government will support residents of Old Crow as they prepare to evacuate their community, and will continue to support residents from the Village of Mayo and the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun following the declaration of a State of Emergency for Mayo and Surrounding Area by the Yukon government.

“We know that the need to leave your home due to risks associated with wildfires can be traumatic. It is always our goal to ensure that all Yukoners feel safe and supported.

“We are currently working across the Government of Yukon and with community partners to ensure the resources requested by Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation Chief Pauline Frost are available in Whitehorse when evacuees arrive. The Canada Games Centre is already set up to accommodate evacuees from Mayo and Old Crow.

“The Government of Yukon has been in regular contact with Chief Frost, First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun Chief Dawna Hope, and Mayo Mayor Trevor Ellis to ensure evacuees from Mayo and Old Crow are supported. We will continue to provide supports to evacuees until these communities are no longer at risk and residents can safely return home.

“Old Crow residents: As you prepare to evacuate, please follow all directions from Vuntut Gwitchin Government and Government of Yukon officials. Make sure to pack critical items, including identification, important documents, and medicines for all evacuees. We strongly encourage you to register with Emergency Support Services (ESS) by phoning 867-332-4597. Registering in advance with ESS allows us to be able to better support you upon your arrival in Whitehorse, but you can also register in person at the Canada Games Centre.

“Mayo residents: The Government of Yukon has declared a State of Emergency in response to wildfires near the Village of Mayo. If you have not already left, please do so immediately. If you need help leaving, ESS can provide resources and information to help you be able to do so safely.

“Thank you to everyone across the territory who has stepped up to offer their support to Mayo and Old Crow residents. This includes Yukon First Nations governments, local businesses, mine operators, and all Yukoners who have opened their homes, offered supplies, and donated supports. We also want to thank all emergency responders who are doing all they can to support residents, protect communities, and manage the wildfire response.

“Our government will continue to be there to support residents from Mayo and Old Crow for as long as it takes. If you need anything, please don’t hesitate to reach out.”
