Summer celebrations of the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

The Commissioner of Yukon, Angélique Bernard, is planning a number of summer events to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II:

On Thursday, June 2, a national illumination initiative is planned where all federal buildings in Canada will be lit up in celebration of the Queen. Due to less darkness available in the Yukon this time of year, the Commissioner’s Office lit up their building in early May and took pictures to share on social media Friday, June 3. 

On Saturday, June 11, the Commissioner of Yukon’s Platinum Jubilee Celebration will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Dawson City Museum. Food will be provided by Bonton & Company and entertainment by youth fiddlers. A story will be shared by the Story Laureate of Yukon, Michael Gates, as well as a presentation of the exhibition The Royal Family in the Yukon. This event replaces the annual Commissioner of Yukon’s Ball, and the tea associated with this celebration will be organized by Parks Canada. 
 
On Wednesday, June 22, at 11:30 a.m., in partnership with Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta’an Kwäch’än Council, there will be the unveiling of the Jubilee Reconciliation Garden at Taylor House in Whitehorse. This is part of a national initiative, with each lieutenant governor and territorial commissioner leading the establishment of a garden in their own jurisdiction.

On Saturday, August 13, there will be the Commissioner of Yukon’s Jubilee Garden Party, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Commissioner’s Residence in Dawson City. There will be cupcakes, games and a story from the Story Laureate of Yukon, Michael Gates. 

The Office of the Commissioner will hold Jubilee Thursdays throughout the summer. Groups and individuals will be invited to come to Taylor House in Whitehorse to have tea and bannock, see the exhibition The Royal Family in the Yukon and celebrate the Queen. 

Yukoners are encouraged to take part in the Jubilee celebrations by sharing their memories of past royal tours in the territory or their encounters with royalty.
