This is a joint news release between the Government of Yukon and the Teslin Tlingit Council.
The Government of Yukon and the Teslin Tlingit Council have partnered to feature local Tlingit artwork on and near the new Nisutlin Bay Bridge. As part of the Nisutlin Bay Bridge Implementation Agreement, the Government of Yukon will contribute $500,000 to support this initiative, with completion targeted for Fall 2027.
Teslin Tlingit Council is seeking artwork that underscores the importance of honouring Tlingit culture that will be incorporated as meaningful artistic elements into the Nisutlin Bay Bridge Replacement Project. This highly visible artwork will provide a significant showcase for the chosen artist, while offering a window into local First Nation culture for visitors passing through the community. The Teslin Tlingit Council will use a community based-approach to select the final designs.
As the Nisutlin Bay Bridge project progresses, both governments anticipate this artwork will enhance the experience of all who use the bridge and celebrate the rich cultural legacy of the Tlingit People.
The Nisutlin Bay Bridge is a vital transportation link for the territory and now serves as an opportunity to highlight the culture and history of the Tlingit People. This partnership will ensure that the bridge stands as a lasting symbol of functional infrastructure and cultural celebration and we look forward to seeing this vision take shape.
The Nisutlin Bay Bridge is a major transportation corridor running through our community. Featuring Tlingit artwork, it honours our culture by bringing a distinct Tlingit presence to this vital infrastructure that connects the Yukon to British Columbia and Alaska.
