This is a joint news release between the Government of Yukon and the City of Whitehorse.
The Government of Yukon and City of Whitehorse are partnering on an application to the federal Build Communities Strong Fund – Direct Delivery stream for $160 million for critical projects in Whitehorse.
This application is separate from, but complements, recently announced federal and territorial funding initiatives to address critical infrastructure needs related to housing, post-secondary education and health care in Whitehorse and around the territory.
The joint application will support essential Whitehorse infrastructure needs in a way that accommodates growth while enhancing regional resilience and long-term stability, including:
- transportation infrastructure, such as upgrades to key road corridors connecting Whistle Bend and Porter Creek to downtown;
- emergency preparedness infrastructure, including a new fire hall in Whistle Bend; and
- community recreational assets, such as upgrades to the Takhini Arena.
The Government of Yukon and the City of Whitehorse propose to support the project with an additional $40 million of investments.
This coordinated approach focuses on strengthening the foundational systems required for sustained presence, economic growth and long-term resilience in the territory and its capital city.
The Government of Yukon is keen to work with the City of Whitehorse as part of this federal infrastructure initiative for shovel-ready projects. An innovative and united approach between our governments helps us access funding for our capital city, which will help us meet the needs of a growing population.
As the territory’s capital city, home to almost 80 per cent of the Yukon’s population, Whitehorse plays a unique role in supporting the territory’s residents, communities and economy, as well as the broader region. Whitehorse is also one of the fastest growing cities in Canada, which is placing an increasing strain on our community infrastructure. It is critical that we work in close partnership with all levels of government to make the necessary investments so that we can continue to grow in a sustainable manner that meets the needs of our citizens.
