Yukon government increases funding for Yukon hospitals

This is a joint news release between the Government of Yukon and Yukon Hospitals.

The Government of Yukon is increasing operational funding for Yukon Hospitals to address high priority and essential needs of $8.34 million for 2026–27.

The government is addressing the full amount by authorizing the corporation to reallocate $4.4 million resulting from a pension contribution holiday and increasing its operation and maintenance transfer by $3.94 million.

Health and Social Services will fully absorb the additional transfer of $3.94 million within its existing 2026–27 budget. This does not increase the department’s operation and maintenance appropriation.

The funding will support priority staffing and operational needs identified by the Yukon Hospital Corporation, including more nurses for all three hospitals.

The Yukon’s hospitals face growing demand for services and increasing support for high-priority operational needs is required. This funding will help Yukon Hospitals respond to immediate staffing and service pressures while being provided without increasing Health and Social Service’s budget for this fiscal year. It reflects pressures including staff costs for eight new beds opened in July.

Minister of Health and Social Services Brad Cathers

We thank the Government of Yukon for this funding and their continued support. As the health care needs of Yukoners grow to be more complex, this support will help us remain responsive to the pressures we experience today. We remain committed to working with our partners to ensure Yukoners get the best care every time.

Chair of the Yukon Hospitals Board of Trustees Pamela Hine
