The Government of Yukon is making significant investments in highways, bridges and aviation infrastructure through the 2027–28 Fall Capital Budget.
Funding will support major transportation improvements across the territory, including continued reconstruction of the North Klondike Highway, rehabilitation of the Shakwak corridor, bridge repairs, roadside safety improvements and upgrades at Yukon airports.
Presenting capital estimates in the fall better aligns government budgeting with procurement timelines and helps projects move forward earlier to make the most of the Yukon’s short construction season.
Safe and reliable highways serve Yukoners, businesses, industry and visitors alike. Ensuring transportation infrastructure is adequately maintained is a key mandate commitment of our government. These investments will allow us to continue improving key transportation corridors, address safety and maintenance needs and keep people and goods moving throughout the territory.
Proposed highway and transportation investments include the following.
- $23.6 million to complete reconstruction of 21.6 kilometres of the North Klondike Highway south of Stewart Crossing in 2027 and to begin reconstruction on a further 17 kilometres of the North Klondike Highway south of Gravel Lake.
- $8.6 million to continue rehabilitation of the North Alaska Highway, also known as the Shakwak corridor.
- $4.5 million toward the Roadside Safety Improvements Program to support vegetation control, sightline improvements and safer travel conditions for all road users throughout the territory.
- $3.5 million to build 1.6 kilometres of multi-use trail along the Alaska Highway in Whitehorse.
- $3 million to address slope erosion caused by high waters along the Alaska Highway near Marsh Lake.
- $2.7 million for rehabilitation work on the Lewes River Bridge.
- $1.8 million to complete structural upgrades to the Watson Lake Airport Terminal.
- $840,000 for pavement repairs and maintenance at the Dawson, Watson Lake and Whitehorse airports.
- $700,000 to support preliminary planning for the potential replacement of the airport maintenance facility at Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport.
- $500,000 toward interim maintenance and repairs to the existing Nisutlin Bay Bridge.
