Yukon government launches new online forestry industry tools

The Government of Yukon has launched a new online forestry resource to help wood harvesters, businesses and Yukoners access information about timber supply and harvesting opportunities across the territory.

The new Forest Sector Overview provides interactive maps, planning information and five-year forestry projections in one place. Users can search existing timber harvest plans, view approved harvest areas and identify upcoming opportunities for permits and licences. The site also makes it easier for Yukoners to find information about personal use fuel wood harvesting and track forestry projects currently under assessment by the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Board.

This season, the site includes information on four new timber harvest projects:

  • Bear Creek II and Silver City Community Fuel Abatement near Haines Junction;
  • Partridge Creek in the Mayo district; and
  • Dempster near Dawson.

Wood harvesters can access a snapshot of Yukon forestry today, with annual data and a roadmap on how forestry is planned and regulated, its trends and challenges and how timber is being harvested.

Users can also find lists of all approved timber harvest areas, and all projects in YESAB along with the next areas that are available for permits. There are sections on wildfire protection, fuel abatement work and forestry infrastructure across the territory.

Annual harvest volumes by district and wood supply planning information are available through the site, helping provide a clearer picture of how the Government of Yukon is supporting a steady supply of firewood and sawlogs while promoting responsible forest management and wildfire mitigation over the next five years.

This is about making forestry information easier to access and easier to use in order to improve access to timber throughout the territory. If people want to harvest timber, apply for permits or understand what opportunities are coming up in their area, they should be able to find that information quickly. These new tools help accomplish that and are part of the broader initiatives underway by the Government of Yukon to improve transparency and service standards for Yukoners.
