Yukon government provides certainty for industry with early capital funding approval

The Interim Capital Appropriation Act, 2027–28 has received assent, authorizing $138.8 million for select capital projects and giving contractors, suppliers and the Yukon’s private sector more time to prepare for the 2027 construction season.

The early funding approval allows the government to begin procurement and contracting earlier, so businesses can prepare bids, organize workers and equipment and plan their work. The funding complements the regular budget process and does not increase overall planned capital spending in 2027–28.

The capital funding includes more than $46 million for transportation improvements, such as work on the North Klondike Highway and Shakwak corridor. It also includes investments in housing, community infrastructure, preparatory work related to expanding the Whitehorse General Hospital and a range of work on schools.

With the Act in place, government departments can start procurement and contracting for eligible projects as well as design, approvals and tendering processes. Project implementation timelines will still depend on completing those processes and on seasonal conditions.

This achievement fulfils an important fiscal commitment of this government. Passing this legislation gives Yukon businesses and contractors a clearer picture of the work ahead. Earlier notice can help industry plan its workforce, equipment and bids while also helping the government move projects through procurement in time for the short construction season.
