Yukon launches National Pharmacare Program, improving access to contraception and diabetes medication

The Government of Yukon announces that the Yukon National Pharmacare Program launches on April 15, 2026, providing universal, single-payer, first-dollar coverage for eligible contraception and diabetes medications.

Through this program, Yukoners will benefit from improved access to medications to manage their reproductive health. By removing financial barriers, more Yukoners can access medications.

Under the new program, Yukoners who qualify will receive eligible diabetes medications and contraceptive products for free or at low cost. This initiative is the result of a bilateral agreement signed with the Government of Canada in March 2025 aimed at strengthening the health care system and improving affordability.

The Government of Yukon has partnered with Pacific Blue Cross to administer the program. Claims will be adjudicated in real-time at pharmacies, and the program will act as the primary payer, even for eligible residents with existing private insurance.

Yukoners are encouraged to speak with their health care provider to learn more about available treatment options and to confirm whether their prescriptions are covered under the program.

Providing access to more medications supports the health and wellbeing of Yukoners. This program supports reproductive health and access to diabetes medications.

Minister of Health and Social Services Brad Cathers

Many Yukoners are feeling the pressure of daily expenses, including the high cost of their medications. This pharmacare program means that Yukon residents will no longer have to worry about the cost of many diabetes and contraceptive medications, improving their quality of life.

Federal Minister of Health Marjorie Michel
