The Government of Yukon is listening to local businesses across the territory and is committed to helping them meet their labour needs.
In order to help businesses respond to the labour shortage, the Government of Yukon has successfully advocated with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada for an increased allocation in 2023 to the Yukon Nominee Program. The Yukon has received an increase of 150 to its 2023 allocations, for a total allocation of 580.
This helps employers fill crucial positions with foreign nationals who intend to settle in the Yukon, strengthening the territory’s workforce. Increases to the allocation under this program are a direct result of the Yukon government’s continued advocacy and collaboration with the federal government.
Economic immigration is an essential tool for businesses to meet their labour needs when they are unable to find local workers to fill positions. It is also crucial for helping develop a labour force that supports investment and economic growth.
The Government of Yukon is committed to supporting and encouraging diversity across the territory. Nominees accepted under the program contribute to the territory’s economic security and cultural fabric. The Yukon will continue to welcome newcomers and embrace their many contributions to our communities.
This allocation increase to the Yukon Nominee Program is beneficial for businesses and good news for all Yukoners. These 150 new workers will contribute to the overall wellbeing and vibrancy of the Yukon and I thank the Government of Canada for listening to the needs of Yukon businesses. Our government will continue to advocate for effective immigration tools to assist Yukon businesses with their labour needs. The Yukon receives allocations from the Government of Canada under the Provincial Nominee Program. This informs how many applications the territory can approve in a year.
The Yukon’s base allocation for 2023 was increased in March 2023, from 300 to 430. We returned to Canada to request additional allocations due to unprecedented demand from Yukon’s business community.
The Department of Economic Development administers two immigration programs in partnership with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC): the Yukon Nominee Program (YNP) and the Yukon Business Nominee Program (YBNP).
In 2022, the Yukon Nominee Program utilized its full annual allocations for the second time since the program was established in 2007.
This program is for economic immigration and is meant to be used when local or Canadian workers cannot be found in the existing workforce. If an employer’s attempts to hire locally or nationally unsuccessful, this program is available to them.
The program allows qualified foreign nationals the opportunity to work and settle in the Yukon with the long-term goal of establishing themselves as permanent residents of Canada.
