Yukon youth recognized for outstanding commitment to their communities

Four Yukon youths have received the Outstanding Youth Achievement Award for their contributions throughout the territory.

The 2025 recipients are Juan Jordan Guzman of Whitehorse, Kevaughn Anderson of Dawson, Lusanna Lu of Whitehorse and Melody Qiu of Whitehorse.

This award recognizes these youth for their positive impact on the Yukon. Each recipient has contributed in their own unique way, including outstanding performances in the arts, athletics, academics and community involvement.

Each recipient will receive $250, a certificate and a medallion of recognition from the Commissioner of Yukon’s office. Additionally, posters highlighting each recipient and their accomplishments will be distributed across the territory.

Thank you to Juan, Kevaughn, Lusanna and Melody for being exceptional role models and for helping your communities. We are incredibly proud of everything you have accomplished at such a young age.

Backgrounder

Juan Jordan Guzman

Juan, 17, is being recognized for his outstanding ambitions and significant contributions to his school and broader community. As co-president at St. Francis of Assisi School, he represents his classmates with integrity and helps lead important school initiatives. Juan is actively involved in the Social Justice club and played a key role in the creation of the Next Gen Men club. His personal achievements span academics, engineering and the arts. He won first place at both the Yukon Engineering Bridge Building and Robotics contests and has been recognized for his talent in theatre productions. Juan shares his passion for learning by leading a five-day robotics camp for elementary students and working with the Launch Pad program to grow his understanding of engineering. Aside from his academic involvement, Juan volunteers with Whitehorse Connects and takes part in annual food drives. Juan’s peers admire his dedication, authenticity and strong sense of purpose.

Kevaughn Anderson

Kevaughn, 20, is being recognized for his strong leadership and deep commitment, which have made a lasting impact on Dawson and beyond. Whether volunteering with the Dawson City Fire Department, the local Emergency Medical Services team or as a coach with Sub-Zero volleyball, Kevaughn leads with dedication and humility. He also mentors youth involved in the justice system, helping them rebuild confidence and find direction through activities and positive relationships. His efforts have earned him several honours, including the RCMP Community Award, the Giovanni Casterllarin Scholarship Junior Award and being named one of the most valuable players for his volleyball team in 2024. Alongside his volunteer work, Kevaughn excels academically. He graduated with honours in 2023 and made the Dean’s List at Yukon University in 2024. Despite his many commitments, he also works part-time at the Jëje Zho Men’s shelter. Kevaughn’s exemplary attitude and advocacy for community wellbeing make him an outstanding role model for the people around him.

Lusanna Lu

Lusanna, 17, is being recognized for her accomplishments as a youth leader and for her volunteer contributions to her community. From caring for animals at the Humane Society to supporting patients at Whitehorse General Hospital and tutoring younger students at Whitehorse Elementary, Lusanna shows responsibility, empathy and dedication in everything she does. She actively promotes diversity and inclusion through her work at the Multicultural Centre of the Yukon and shares her musical talent by teaching piano. Academically, Lusanna takes advanced classes and was selected for the University of Alberta getaway program, showing her ambition for personal and academic growth. Outside the classroom, Lusanna is a dedicated dancer at Northern Lights School of Dance and balances school, service and part-time work at the Save on Foods pharmacy. Lusanna’s strong work ethic, community spirit and leadership make her a shining example of youth making a difference in the Yukon.

Melody Qiu

Melody, 17, is being recognized as a passionate and dedicated young leader who has a made a meaningful impact on both her school and wider community. As co-president of St. Francis of Assisi, Melody leads by example to organize events, represent students and work with students and school administration to create positive change. Her commitment and dedication also shines through in athletics. Melody has competed as a swimmer with the Whitehorse Glacier Bears Swim Club and represented Team Yukon in table tennis, earning multiple medals at the 2023 and 2024 Arctic Winter Games. Melody gives back to her community through her volunteering and tutoring roles. She helps lead Youth Moving Mountains STEAM camp, works as a swim instructor, volunteers with the Chinese Canadian Association of Yukon and supports her classmates as a tutor and teacher’s assistant. Her academic excellence earned her first place at the Yukon Engineering Bridge Building Competition in 2024. With a strong work ethic and ability to inspire others, Melody is a standout role model and valued member of her community.
