Order a death certificate

You can order a death certificate for a person who died in the Yukon.

A death certificate is an official document that provides information from a death registration.

You may need it to:

• settle an estate;
• access benefits;
• close accounts; or
• provide proof of death.

The Office of the Registrar of Vital Statistics can only issue death certificates for deaths that occurred in the Yukon. If the person died in another province or territory, contact the vital statistics office where the death occurred.

Who can apply

Anyone who has knowledge of the deceased person can apply for a death certificate.

You demonstrate this knowledge through the information you provide on the application.

Before you apply

If a person was in a common-law relationship when they died, their marital status will appear as "single" on the death certificate.

Apply for a death certificate

1. Complete the application for certificate, certified copy or search.
2. Submit your application and payment:
   • by mail; or
   • in person.

Fees

A death certificate costs $10.

We accept:

• cash;
• debit;
• Visa;
• Mastercard;
• American Express; and
• money orders.

If you apply for a certificate or search and no record is found, we retain the $10 fee to cover administrative costs.

Processing times

Processing can take up to 10 business days.

Receive your certificate

When you apply, choose whether you want to:

• pick up your certificate in person; or
• receive it by registered mail.

If you choose to pick up your certificate, we’ll call you when it’s ready.

If you choose registered mail, we’ll mail the certificate to the address provided on your application.
