Government of Yukon building energy use data is now publicly available

The Government of Yukon is now publishing our buildings’ energy use data via Energy Star Portfolio Manager (ESPM). We hope this data can:

  • contribute to a more accurate representation of how buildings in the Yukon use energy; and
  • inspire new solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate change is an issue that affects everyone and we have an ambitious greenhouse gas reduction target of 30 per cent below 2010 levels by 2030. To help meet this goal, we're developing and implementing energy conservation and renewable energy projects.

An important part of this is having reliable utility data. We collect, manage and analyze energy use data for more than 250 buildings owned and managed by the Government of Yukon. Information from utility bills is stored in an internal database called Public Buildings Energy Tracker (PBET). This data from PBET is automatically uploaded to our ESPM account every night.

Having accurate data is essential to making informed decisions, and we have a rigorous process to ensure our data is high quality. This includes:

  • internal monthly checks to identify and investigate anomalies;
  • quarterly data reviews with building staff to verify unusual energy bills; and
  • third-party verification for compliance with industry standards every 5 years.

We use this data for a lot of our program functions, including:

  • reporting on our corporate greenhouse gas emissions;
  • evaluating buildings’ energy performance to plan retrofits and renewable energy projects;
  • calculating energy use impacts to inform project designs; and
  • conducting evaluations on building retrofits, renewable energy systems and new construction projects.

If you're interested in accessing our building energy use data, follow these steps:

  2. Create an account and add the Government of Yukon as a contact.
  3. Make requests to add buildings, following ESPM guidance.
