The purpose of this engagement was to help us learn more about what areas of government services to focus on and how to best engage LGBTQ2S+ Yukoners.

The feedback helped to identify seven priority areas for further discussion in the next phase of engagement:

  • Health care delivery
  • Education
  • Creation of an LGBTQ2S+ advisor position
  • Employment
  • Identification and registration documents
  • Business development
  • Social isolation and connectedness

We also heard that a successful public engagement with LGBTQ2S+ Yukoners should include these features:

  • A number of ways and formats to engage that are both accessible and safe. This might involve support for people to attend in-person dialogues with a travel subsidy or focus groups that would allow more communities to participate.
  • Counselling and mental health supports at in-person engagement events.
  • Ways to build local capacity to continue to support LGBTQ2S+ inclusion and equity.
  • A discussion about gaps, barriers and inconsistencies in government’s services, policies and practices.

This pre-engagement took place in the spring and summer of 2018. The BC non-profit organization QMUNITY led the process.

QMUNITY reached out on our behalf to the local LGBTQ2S+ community and other equality-seeking organizations. QMUNITY received feedback from face-to-face discussions with representatives from the following groups:

  • Dawson Pride
  • The Public Service Alliance of Canada
  • North Yukon Regional Pride Committee
  • Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Youth Drop-In
  • Victoria Faulkner Women’s Centre
  • Yukon Human Rights Commission
  • The Yukon Women’s Transition Home.
What was this engagement about?

The purpose of this pre-engagement was to learn how a public engagement process should be designed, so that members of the Yukon LGBTQ2S+ community and their allies feel safe and included. We also wanted to learn about the needs and priorities of LGBTQ2S+ Yukoners that could be discussed further during the public engagement process. By designing a safe and inclusive public engagement process, we can prioritize areas for improvement, so that government laws, programs, and services meet the social standards of non-discrimination.

We invited participation by posting the public engagement on Engage Yukon and by reaching out at the grassroots level. People who wanted to participate were encouraged to contact QMUNITY or the Women’s Directorate.

The information we collected will help us have safe, confidential, and inclusive conversations with the LGBTQ2S+ community in the future.

How will my input make a difference?

Your input helped us ensure the next phase of public engagement is successful and that it helps us meet the needs and priorities of LGBTQ2S+ Yukoners. The full public engagement on LGBTQ2S+ inclusion will take place this winter (2018-19).
