The Forest Management Branch undertook forest value surveys at the CAFN General Assembly on July 20, 2019. Surveys were also available for pickup at the Haines Junction Compliance, Monitoring and Inspections Office and the Forest Management Branch in Whitehorse from July 20, 2019 to August 30, 2019. 17 surveys with 14 comments were received and compiled.

As part of the engagement process, two open houses were attended in Haines Junction.  The Forest Management Branch hosted an open house on November 5, 2019 that was specific to the draft Quill Creek Timber Harvest Plan, and the Alsek Renewable Resource Council hosted a multi-agency open house on December 12, 2019.

The Yukon Bureau of Statistics hosted an online survey between November 13, 2019 and December 13, 2019. 11 surveys with 14 comments were completed and compiled.

The feedback that we have received has three major themes:

  • Timber harvesting is important for the local economy.
  • Fuel abatement and fire risk management are important in the Quill Creek area.
  • Access management needs to balance limiting additional access into remote areas with recreational uses of the area.

What’s next?

Following public consultation, the Government of Yukon will submit the draft Quill Creek Timber Harvest Plan to the YESAB Executive Committee for screening, where the public will have additional opportunities for comment. The Government of Yukon will then make a decision on whether to approve the plan.

What was this engagement about?

After two years of work with the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, local residents and stakeholders including the Alsek Renewable Resources Council and the Yukon Wood Products Association, we have a draft timber harvest plan for the Quill Creek area.

We asked Yukoners:

  • if the draft timber harvest plan for the Quill Creek area meets the needs of the people in the Kluane region; and
  • if you feel the plan provides a balanced approach for the management and use of forests in the area.

The Quill Creek Draft Timber Harvest Plan

  • identifies values and interests related to the forests in the Quill Creek area; and
  • provides a balanced approach for the management and use of these forests.

The recommended plan guides:

  • how and where forest harvesting may occur;
  • how forestry will contribute to the local economy; and
  • addressing the risk of forest fires in the area.

The draft plan considers key values and concerns including:

  • fish and wildlife habitat;
  • forest health; and
  • existing development.

The draft timber harvest plan was prepared by Yukon Wood Products Association with input provided by:

  • Champagne and Aishihik First Nations;
  • Alsek Renewable Resources Council; and
  • the Government of Yukon.

Through this engagement we want to inform the public about the contents of the draft plan and gather feedback on the recommended plan.

How will my input make a difference?

This engagement is one of several ways to provide feedback on the recommended plan.

Additional opportunities to comment on the draft timber harvest plan for Quill Creek will be available when the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Board reviews the plan later this year.

The information you share will help the Government of Yukon decide on the final timber harvest plan for Quill Creek.
