How it all started

Kyle obtained an Environmental Technician diploma from Aurora College in the Northwest Territories. Later, he completed a Bachelor of Environmental Conservation Sciences with a focus on northern systems at Yukon University.

Following summer jobs and co-op program placements, he found himself working at an environmental consulting firm. A short time later, he became aware of the natural resource officer position through a former colleague and decided it would be a good fit for his skills and experience.

What he likes about his job

One of the benefits Kyle finds in working for the Compliance, Monitoring and Inspection team – which is where all natural resource officers work is the flexibility he has with his schedule. As a new father, he was able to take several months’ parental leave to support his partner and adjust to his role as a parent. Now, he’s able to adapt his schedule to meet the needs of his young family.

Kyle finds his work rewarding because natural resource officers are an important part of the checks and balances system. They make sure the mineral resource sector operates in an environmentally sound way. He can flag a concern early, recommend changes and see the positive outcomes first-hand.

Career highlight

A memorable experience in his career so far is when Kyle flew to a remote part of the Yukon. He was busy putting together a last-minute water sampling program in collaboration with the Department of Environment’s Water Resources Unit. The flight took them over the Selwyn Mountains when every colour of fall was on display. It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences that fills you with awe.

Advice to applicants

Kyle says, “Although the application process can take time, stick with it and reach out to the HR consultant on the job ad for help if you need it.”
