Commissioner of Yukon’s statement on the passing of Ken McKinnon

Ken McKinnon

Commissioner of Yukon, Angélique Bernard released the following statement:

The Office of the Commissioner of Yukon is saddened to hear of the passing of Ken McKinnon, former local politician, Commissioner of Yukon and Chancellor of Yukon College, among other important roles.

The Commissioner of Yukon, Angélique Bernard, wanted to let Mr. McKinnon’s friends, former colleagues and people who had the opportunity to work with him at various moments comment on his passing first. It is wonderful to see that he left such an important legacy in the Yukon community.

Over the weekend, the Commissioner of Yukon had the chance to reread the section on Ken McKinnon in the book At the Heart of Gold, written by Linda Johnson. This book recalls the history of the Office of the Commissioner of Yukon from 1898 to 2010. Chapter seven is dedicated to Ken McKinnon’s term as Commissioner of Yukon from 1986 to 1995. The readers get to discover Ken through his own words.

His various work and life experiences served him well in his life as a politician, Commissioner and community member. His involvement in sports was also significant and led to the organization of the first Arctic Winter Games in 1970.

Ken McKinnon is recognized for his extensive work done toward achieving responsible government, devolution and land claims for the Yukon and its people.

The Office of the Commissioner of Yukon sends its love and prayers to Mr. McKinnon’s wife Judy and their children Craig and Alexia, and all family members.
